Summary

Users wishing to extend the functionality of their pfSense installation may add packages from a selection of software.

Package Installation

Packages may be installed using the Package Manager, located underneath the System menu. The Package Manager will display all the available packages including a brief description of their function. To install a package, click the "Add" icon on the far right of the page. An installation dialogue will then start and display progress. Upon successful completion of a package install, the new package will show up under the "Installed Packages" tab of the pfSense Package Manager.

Removing a pfSense package is similarly easy. From the Installed Packages view, select the "Remove" icon from the far right of the page. This will launch the package installation routine, which will display the progress of the package removal.

Available Packages

There are a number of packages currently in development for pfSense. If you don't see a package for a particular piece of software, feel free to write and submit a pfSense package to the development team. New packages are always welcome.

Specific Package Information

Squid

Squid is a very popular and powerful HTTP cache and proxy. Squid features a full-featured caching infrastructure, useful for conserving bandwidth by caching commonly requested HTTP objects. Squid provides a very powerful and extensible ACL system allowing an administrator to restrict HTTP access based on a variety of criteria including IP address, time of day or type of request. Squid supports using external authenticators to authenticate users against directory servers or radius servers. Squid also supports external redirectors which can redirect outbound connections or re-write them based on a variety of criteria. The current pfSense squid package does not include any redirectors.

Spamd

spamd is a fake sendmail(8)-like daemon which rejects false mail. If the pf(4) packet filter is configured to redirect port 25 (SMTP) to this daemon, it will attempt to waste the time and resources of the spam sender.

Limitations

The packaging subsystem is not available under the embedded pfSense image.
